Region Executive Report: January

Posted on January 5th, 2018

Bob HudsonHappy New Year!

As your new Regional Executive for Atlanta Region, I want to tell you my SCCA story.

I joined Middle Georgia Region in 1977, but my first encounter with SCCA happened much earlier. When Road Atlanta opened in 1970, my brother and his friends attended the very first pro race during their senior year in high school. Later that year when the Runoffs made its first appearance at Road Atlanta, they invited me to join them and I’ve never looked back.

I competed regularly in autocrosses and rallies with MGR and a few times a year my brother and I would travel to Road Atlanta or Roebling Road to volunteer as Pit Marshals.

After moving to Atlanta, I joined Atlanta Region in 1990; raced in Improved Touring a couple of years, served as Assistant Flag Chief, served as a Board Member for Atlanta Region, and I’ve been a Steward over 10 years. In my travels to over a dozen racetracks I’ve met many people I now consider friends who share our passion for SCCA.

2017 was a good year for Atlanta Region. Our long dormant Road Rally program was rekindled by Athens resident Mark Johnson with two well attended events. Solo continued its solid program in Lanier Speedplex. Club Racing had strong entries along with the PDX sessions held during Sunday Quiet Time. And many of our Club Race volunteers were active at other venues outside of Atlanta.

Along the way, Atlanta Region members took home National Championships. Congratulations to Laraine Wilkinson – Super Street Ladies National Champion at the Solo Nationals. Congratulations also to Keith Grant upon winning his second National Championship at the Runoffs; his first in Formula Atlantic. And Trey Ayres won his first National Championship in Spec Racer Ford Gen 3.

Our region bylaws require an annual meeting in February. Make plans to join us on Saturday, February 24th from 2p to 4p at the Atlanta Region office – located in the Regus Office Park at 5051 Peachtree Corners Circle, Norcross 30092.

We’ll take care of official business early, and spend the remaining time in a social meet & greet. I’m looking forward to seeing you.

Bob Hudson, Regional Executive
